Back to black
My Advanced Digital Black and White is now showing up on Amazon and will be published later this year. Starting from the assumption of colour digital capture, it’s much more focussed on the digital darkroom and is as up to date as it can be.
So you’ve not just got Channel Mixer, but the superb Black and White adjustment introduced in Photoshop CS3, and conversion in raw converters such as ACR smart objects, Lightroom and Aperture, and there’s lots on dodging and burning and local contrast control. Photoshop technique is one thing, and easy to write about too, but the underlying creative purpose is what’s important, so the book’s more about the “whys” than the “hows” – without getting too arty farty, of course. Not sure yet when it’s out – probably in time for Christmas?
Oh, and it’s about “black and white” – not “grayscale” as it’s labelled in Adobe Camera Raw and Lightroom. Sacrilege. Can you ever imagine calling Ansel Adams or Don McCullin a “grayscale photographer”?
